Open Science

Open Science is a movement to make the entire research process more accessible and reproducible, including input data, analysis methods, results, and the dissemination and reception of those results.
Its benefits include:

  • Enhanced Understanding – by others (and even the original researcher in the future).
  • Better Review – others can replicate and test to ensure accuracy and veracity.
  • Amplified Impact and Efficiency – others can build on the research to augment its impact in subsequent work. The tendency to ‘reinvent the wheel’ is reduced.
  • Improved Collaboration – multiple researchers, working together or separately, can contribute to tackling difficult problems.

Polar TEP provides tools to assist researchers in participating in all the facets of open and reproducible science:

  • Input Data: Data discovery and visualisation.
  • Analysis: IDE and Machine Learning.
  • Collaboration: Code sharing, commenting, and discussion forums.
  • Results: Packaging of data, algorithms, methods, and conclusions so that research can be reproduced and extended.
  • Dissemination: Telling the story of the research to influence decisions and foster further research.

Polar TEP is part of the European Space Agency EarthCODE (Earth Science Collaborative Open Development Environment) open science initiative.

EarthCODE is a hub for research management, dissemination, community engagement, and learning.

  • Support ESA Earth Science research communities in adopting FAIR and Open Science
  • Accelerate scientific discovery through digital innovation (help researchers use cloud solutions)
  • Ensure long-term persistence and reuse of research (ethically)
  • Collaborate on research and Learn Open Science practices
